Profile Mike Gooding was brought up in Scotland, playing badminton for the Scottish Under 21s. After a brief training under Chris Ronaldson and then working as head professional at Troon, Mike moved to New York via Canford. He returned five years later to Hatfield and won the French Open in 1995 and 1996 and the British Open in 1996. Mike and Chris Bray dominated the doubles tournaments at this time. Though he decided to become a tournament professional after a short time at the Harbour Club, various injuries have caused him problems. In 1998, Mike reached the semi-final of the Dresdner Kleinwort Benson tournament losing to the eventual winner, Nick Wood and went one better the following year by reaching the final. He also reached the final of the British Open and the British Professional Singles in 1999. Mike has the fastest hands in the business and has achieved great fame for his reaction volleys and retrieving. |
